1952

W.R. Fraser won the Canadian Match Title in 1952, by defeating J. D. MacFarlane. The match consisted of rounds of GAYP, 2-Move, 3-Move, and 11-Man. As reported in the 1952 ACF Bulletin. Professor William R. Fraser of Montreal was the Canadian Champion and declared himself Mixed Format (these four formats) World Champion and invited anyone to challenge him. Tinsley defeated him in a 1952 Match in Montreal at all four formats, for a Mixed Match Championship, and no one ever played another such mixed match championship as far as I know, there was never any mention of Dr. Marion Tinsley being a Mixed Champion. Fraser published some of the 11-man games of both matches in his "The Inferno in Checkers." The importance of the ten Tinsley - Fraser 11-man games is that they are world class games (as good as some world championship games) that mostly are not in CTTW. Tinsley was in a loss in one game, apparently not noticed until Jim Loy's book "11-Man Ballot Matches," and he missed a pretty winning shot in another. The shot was not noticed and neither was the fact that the game had transposed into an Old 14th. One of the games is in CTTW, run up from a 3-move opening.

Dr. Marion Tinsley competed with Professor W.R. Fraser of Montreal, Canada in a mixed match of 10 games of go-as-you-please, 10 games of two-move restriction, 10 games of three-move restriction, and 10 games of eleven-man ballot. Dr. Tinsley won the match easily with 14 wins, no losses, and 26 drawn games.M Tinsley.jpg (19951 bytes)
